How can we build a greener last mile delivery ecosystem?

As cities decarbonise population dense centres, traditional delivery vehicles face congestion charges, emissions restrictions, and high operating costs.

In the immediate term, cargo bikes are one of a number of alternatives to vans - electric or otherwise - which help solve this. But systemic challenges remain, reducing efficiency upstream.

For FedEx, we looked at how an adaptable platform, built to regulations governing low-speed vehicles, could deliver advantages to microconsoliation - and so alleviate choke points in logistics.

Our concept, designed for cities, integrates modular storage, and electric-assist systems which speak to complimentary zero-emissions processes - offering a sustainable, scalable solution that optimizes last-mile delivery while enhancing city mobility and efficiency.

The initiative was a strategic design thought piece, feeding into logistics planning.
